Film Viewing and Rental

How is my credit card information stored if I rent a film to preview online?

GRC uses Gumroad to facilitate rentals of our series and films. Their guidance is as follows: When you make a purchase on Gumroad, GRC will see the email address used for the purchase and the name or any other information that you enter into the field at checkout. We will not, however, see your credit card information or the name on your card. You will be asked after your purchase whether or not you want to receive updates from us, and you can unsubscribe from the updates we send you through Gumroad at anytime. Please see more information on how Gumroad ensures your privacy is protected.

Can I download the episode or film once I rent it?

Our films and show episodes can only be streamed and are not available for download when you rent as an individual. However, digital downloads are available for media outlets and educational institutions that pay to license a film or series.

What if I want to purchase the film?

Purchasing, as an individual, is not available at this time on our platform. Licensing options are available, however, for media outlets and educational institutions.

I want to view a film I see online for personal use. How does it work? How much does it cost?

To view an online film you would first need to select the film you are interested in. After making your selection, you’ll be routed to the Gumroad website, where you’ll be able to rent the film. Generally, it costs US$5.99 to rent feature-length films and US$3.99 to rent shorts. However, some of our shorts, tagged with a premium badge, rent for the higher price of US$5.99.

How long does each rental last?

Rentals that have not yet been started typically last 30 days. Once rentals have been started, they last for 72 hours (3 days).

Film Representation and Revenue

How will I know how many times my film or series is rented or licensed?

The Gumroad website generates analytics of how often a film/ series has been rented. An analytics report will be submitted to you with all the relevant information when we send payouts due to you.

How do you prevent piracy of my work?

All films and series are streamed online and not able to be downloaded by individuals. Stations and universities that purchase a license must sign contracts that outline the rules regarding content use and will face penalties if used outside of the terms of our agreement. See sample contract with a university here. See sample contract with a station here.

How often will I receive a payout once my film is rented or licensed?

Once your balance from licenses or rentals exceeds US$50, you will receive a payout net of fees to your preferred payment method within two weeks of exceeding that amount. If your balance is below US$50, then your payout will be provided once per year on December 31st of that year.

How do I make money from my films or TV series?

Producers are able to make money from their series or films after it has been sold to a licensee, which is most often an educational institution or a media outlet. You can also make money when your content is rented online by users of our website.

What will be my cut?

GRC’s fee is 30% of gross revenues received from the licensee or from a rental on our website. Your cut will be around 70%, but items like bank fees are taken out of that 70%.

How do I sign up for my film or series to be viewed on this platform or represented by GRC?

If you are interested in having your film represented by GRC, you can send an email to our production team at production@18degreesnorth.tv. This email should entail a synopsis of the series or film, a trailer, date of release, country(ies) of filming/production, name of producer/director and who owns the rights to the media content. After the film is approved by GRC, a contract outlining our agreement will be provided to formalize the legal obligations of each party. See our sample contract.

What if I have already signed with a distributor to market my film or series? Will GRC still represent it?

If you have an exclusive relationship with a distributor in a territory, we will not represent you in that territory but would be happy to represent you in another jurisdiction. In cases where you have a non-exclusive relationship in a particular territory, GRC is happy to represent you in the same territory but does require a level of disclosure from you as to where your film is specifically being marketed in the territory so we aren’t overlapping with the other distributor in marketing to the same entities.

How long will I be locked in for?

The agreement with GRC generally lasts for 3 years and will automatically renew without further need for documentation unless either party wishes to terminate giving thirty (30) days’ notice.

Where will my film or series be marketed?

GRC markets to everywhere in the world. However, most of our clients are based in the U.S., Caribbean, Canada, and the U.K. and are usually stations or universities. As a producer, you can opt to give us exclusive or non-exclusive rights to market your content to all of our territories or just some.

What if I want to license a film or series but I’d like to use your platform to stream it internally for our institution?

It is possible for your educational institution to use our platform to stream the videos you are interested in for your users. This yearly fee covers the license for each film you select for one year, full streaming access for each film, platform administration costs and email support.Upon selection of this service, you will be signed up for our members subscription service, hosted by Gumroad. We will provide a coupon code that will be valid for one year. Through that code, you will have access to the films that you have selected as part of the membership. When a student or teaching professional wants to access the available films, they would contact your library, and your library would share the code, which the user would then input on Gumroad to see the film.Since the overall membership expires after one year, institutions are encouraged to turn on automatic payment renewal to avoid the license being revoked. To sign up for this customized service, please contact us at production@18degreesnorth.tv, We'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible.
